Cryptojacking

Cryptojacking is a type of cyberattack where hackers use vulnerable websites or software to secretly mine cryptocurrency without the user’s knowledge. This is done by leveraging the processing power of the victim’s device to solve complex mathematical problems that validate transactions on the blockchain and generate new coins.

Typically, cryptojacking scripts are injected into websites or delivered through phishing emails. When a user visits an infected site or clicks on a malicious link, the script runs in the background, consuming the device’s resources and slowing down its performance. The hacked devices may experience overheating, reduced battery life, and increased electricity bills as a result of the unauthorized mining activity.

To prevent cryptojacking, users can install ad-blockers, anti-malware software, and keep their operating systems up to date. Website owners can also implement security measures such as using Content Security Policy (CSP) headers and regularly monitoring for unusual spikes in CPU usage. By staying vigilant and taking proactive measures, individuals and organizations can protect themselves from falling victim to cryptojacking attacks.
