The Open Network (TON) Foundation announced an expanded partnership with Telegram Messenger, making TON the exclusive blockchain infrastructure for Telegram’s Mini App Ecosystem. The collaboration aims to integrate blockchain technology seamlessly into Telegram’s services, overseeing more than 950 million monthly active users globally. Notably, the latest development appeared in a January 21 press release.
Under the agreement, TON’s wallet connect protocol, TON Connect, will become the standard for all Web3-based mini apps on Telegram. The protocol will streamline blockchain transactions, including wallet authorization, digital asset transfers, and on-chain signatures. Developers using blockchain features within Telegram's Mini App platform must implement TON Connect within the next month, according to the foundation.
Commenting on the new development, Manuel Stotz, President of The Open Network Foundation, said: “After laying foundational groundwork over the last years, TON is now ready for explosive growth in 2025. The re-energized, deepened, and exclusive partnership with Telegram is an important step in our roadmap.”
Toncoin Adopted as Exclusive Cryptocurrency for Telegram Payments
The partnership also designates Toncoin as the only cryptocurrency for payments on Telegram’s platform. Services such as Telegram Stars, Telegram Premium, and Telegram Ads will exclusively use Toncoin for non-fiat transactions.
Telegram plans to further tokenize assets such as emojis, stickers, and limited-edition digital gifts exclusively on the TON blockchain, potentially creating a marketplace for blockchain-based digital collectibles.
Developer Transition Encouraged Amid Exclusive Integration
The TON Foundation is urging developers to migrate to TON Connect to ensure uninterrupted services for Telegram users. Developers completing the migration within Telegram’s deadline will receive additional support, including promotional opportunities from the foundation.
This latest agreement deepens the partnership between the organizations, which began in 2023 and marks a significant step in TON's roadmap for growth. The foundation aims to empower 500 million users by the end of the decade.
