Early Life and Education

Changpeng Zhao, or CZ as the world knows him, was born on February 5, 1977, in Jiangsu province, China. His early years were shaped by significant challenges. CZ’s family had an academic background,  his father was a university professor.

However, during China’s political unrest, his father Shengkai Zhao was labeled a “pro-bourgeois intellect,” and exiled to rural areas shortly after Zhao’s birth which led to social and financial hardships for the family. Despite these tough conditions, CZ grew up in an environment that emphasized the value of education and resilience.

From a young age, he developed a curiosity for technology and a drive to overcome adversity, traits that would later define his career in the fast-paced world of cryptocurrencies.

Immigration to Canada

In the late 1980s, when CZ was still a young teenager, his family made a life-changing move to Vancouver, Canada. The transition wasn’t easy. Arriving in a foreign land with limited resources, the family had to start over.

CZ often helped his family make ends meet by working various part-time jobs, including flipping burgers at McDonald’s and pumping gas at a local station.

These early experiences of hard work and adaptation not only taught him about perseverance but also gave him a unique perspective on financial freedom,  a theme that would later become central to his philosophy in the crypto industry.

Academic Pursuits

CZ’s passion for technology guided his educational path. He enrolled at McGill University in Montreal, one of Canada’s most prestigious institutions, where he pursued a degree in computer science.

While the academic environment at McGill was stimulating, CZ also faced the typical challenges of an immigrant student, balancing studies, part-time jobs, and adjusting to a new culture. However, his determination to succeed never wavered.

By the time he graduated, CZ had built a strong technical foundation, particularly in software development and finance-related technologies skills that would later enable him to revolutionize the world of digital finance.

Professional Journey Before Binance

Before Changpeng Zhao (CZ) became a household name in crypto, he had already built an impressive career in finance and technology, blending both in ways that would later define his success.

After finishing his degree in computer science at McGill University, CZ took his first steps into the professional world by landing an internship in Tokyo, Japan.

There, he worked for a company that developed software for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, focusing on systems that matched trade orders at lightning speed. This experience gave him a firsthand look at how global financial systems operated behind the scenes.

CZ’s next big career move took him to Bloomberg Tradebook, a well-known name in the finance industry. At Bloomberg, he spent several years as a futures trading software developer, working across offices in Tokyo, New York, and London.

His role involved developing and optimizing trading systems for financial institutions, giving him valuable exposure to the fast-paced, high-stakes space of traditional finance.

Entry into the Cryptocurrency Industry

In 2013, CZ’s career took a bold turn when he stumbled upon Bitcoin at a poker game, where a fellow player Bobby lee introduced him to the concept of cryptocurrencies. Intrigued by the idea of decentralized money, CZ became fascinated with Bitcoin’s potential to disrupt traditional finance.

Eager to be a part of  this emerging space, he sold his entire estate and invested everything in Bitcoin which was trading at around $600.

CZ joined Blockchain.info, one of the earliest and most popular Bitcoin wallet providers. At Blockchain.info, he worked alongside industry pioneers like Roger Ver and Ben Reeves, contributing to the development of secure wallet technology and helping onboard new users into the crypto ecosystem.

Following his stint at Blockchain.info, CZ moved on to OKCoin, a major cryptocurrency exchange at the time. At OKCoin, he served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), overseeing the technical development of the platform that allowed users to trade between fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies.

This experience at OKCoin gave him valuable insights into the challenges and inefficiencies of crypto exchanges — lessons he would later apply to create Binance, a platform he envisioned as faster, more user-friendly, and truly global.

Founding of Binance

In 2017, Changpeng Zhao (CZ) decided it was time to create his own path. After years of working with other crypto platforms, he realized there was still a gap in the market for an exchange that was fast, easy to use, and truly global.

So, along with his business partner and fellow crypto enthusiast, Yi He, CZ launched Binance. To kick things off, Binance held an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), a popular way for crypto projects to raise funds by selling their own digital tokens.

In just a few weeks, the ICO raised an impressive $15 million, thanks to the excitement and trust from the global crypto community. The token they launched, called BNB (Binance Coin), would later become a key part of Binance’s ecosystem, offering users discounts on trading fees and other perks.

Rapid Growth and Success

Binance didn’t just enter the market, it exploded onto the scene. Within just six months, Binance had become the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world by trading volume.

In April 2019, Binance launched Binance Smart Chain, a faster, cheaper alternative to Ethereum with smart contract support.

In February 2018, Forbes ranked CZ as the third richest person in crypto, estimating his wealth between $1.1 and $2 billion.

A year later, in 2019, CZ expanded Binance’s reach by launching Binance.US, the company’s U.S.-based exchange.

In 2021, Binance also pulled back from Singapore, withdrawing its application to run a crypto exchange there.

This meteoric rise shocked many industry veterans and made CZ an overnight superstar in the crypto industry. Several factors contributed to Binance rise among its peers some of which are: User-Friendly Interface, fast trading engine, low fees and high liquidity, global focus and innovations.

Legal Challenges and Controversies

Source: Medium

While Changpeng Zhao (CZ) and Binance became giants in the crypto industry, their journey was not without controversy. One of the biggest storms hit in 2023, when both CZ and Binance came under intense scrutiny from U.S. regulators.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and other federal agencies accused Binance of violating anti-money laundering (AML) laws, claiming the platform failed to implement sufficient controls to prevent illicit activities.

The case alleged that Binance allowed users to bypass regulations, which led to the platform being used for money laundering, terrorism financing, and other illegal activities

In a shocking turn, CZ and Binance pleaded guilty to the charges. Binance agreed to pay a record-breaking $4.3 billion in fines, marking one of the largest financial penalties ever in the crypto industry.

CZ himself was personally fined $50 million and was sentenced to four months in prison, a historic moment as it made him one of the first major crypto founders to face jail time for regulatory violations. Zhao was replaced as CEO by Richard Teng.

FTX Lawsuit

As if the regulatory issues weren’t enough, CZ faced more legal battles in 2024. The collapsed crypto exchange FTX, led by Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), filed a $1.8 billion lawsuit against Binance and CZ. It alleged the sum  was fraudulently transferred by Sam Bankman-Fried

The lawsuit also alleged that CZ’s public statements and actions — especially tweets questioning FTX’s financial health in 2022 — triggered a panic that accelerated FTX’s downfall. FTX claimed these actions were part of a deliberate attempt to undermine their business.

Although CZ and Binance denied any wrongdoing, the lawsuit added another layer of controversy to CZ’s already dramatic story. It also highlighted the rivalries and power struggles that exist behind the scenes in the highly competitive crypto exchange industry.

Public Perception and Criticism

These legal troubles had a significant impact on CZ’s public image. Once seen purely as a visionary entrepreneur, CZ began facing accusations that he prioritized profits over ethics and compliance.

Critics argued that Binance’s aggressive growth tactics, such as quickly expanding into loosely regulated markets and allegedly turning a blind eye to questionable users contributed to the very regulatory backlash the company eventually faced.

Some even drew comparisons between CZ and other controversial crypto figures, like Sam Bankman-Fried, suggesting that both pushed boundaries too far in their quest for market dominance.

Despite these criticisms, CZ also maintained a loyal fan base who viewed him as a bold innovator who was simply caught in the crosshairs of an evolving regulatory environment.

Net Worth and Financial Standing

Changpeng Zhao is one of the richest people in the world,  all thanks to his work in the crypto industry. As of May 2025, CZ’s net worth is estimated at around $62.1 billion, putting him among the top 24th richest people globally. He made history as the richest person to go to jail in the U.S.

Most of this wealth comes from the success of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, which CZ founded in 2017. Even though he stepped down as CEO, he still owns a large part of the company, which continues to do billions of dollars in daily trades.

CZ’s journey from flipping burgers at McDonald’s to becoming a billionaire shows how fast things can change in the world of crypto and technology.

CZ’s wealth goes up and down with the crypto market since he still owns about 90% of Binance.
Recently, he shared what’s in his portfolio:

  • 98.48% in Binance Coin (BNB)
  • 1.32% in Bitcoin (BTC)
  • 0.17% in Eurite (EURI)
  • 0.03% in Tether (USDT)

The exact amount of BNB he holds isn’t publicly known, but it makes up almost all of his wealth.

Even after stepping down as CEO of Binance, CZ didn’t slow down. Instead, he shifted his focus to new roles, technologies, and educational projects that show his passion for shaping the future of tech and finance.

In May 2025, CZ took on a new government role. He was appointed as an advisor to the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, where he helps the country develop its digital asset and blockchain strategies.

Even though CZ stepped down from Binance, he’s still active in the crypto industry. He launched Giggle Academy, a free education platform aimed at making learning accessible to everyone.

He also joined the advisory board of Vana, a startup that focuses on blockchain and AI.

Interestingly, Vana recently got funding from YZi Labs which used to be called Binance Labs. This shows that CZ still has some indirect connections to his old company, even if he’s moved on to new projects.
