Blue Origin passengers can now pay for suborbital trips using cryptocurrency and stablecoins under a new payment arrangement announced Monday with Shift4 Payments, Inc. The agreement allows customers booking seats on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket to use digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDT and USDC.
The option is available immediately for future flights, according to the companies. Shift4 will process transactions through its integrated payment system, enabling direct wallet connections from some selected trading platforms.
Expanding Payment Options for Space Travel
Blue Origin has flown more than 75 people past the Kármán Line, the internationally recognized boundary of space, aboard its reusable New Shepard spacecraft. The new payment option is intended to give prospective travellers additional methods to complete transactions, particularly for international customers.
Shift4 said the integration supports instant settlement in U.S. dollars, with the ability to process payments at any time. The move comes as demand for flexible payment systems grows across industries, including tourism.
The companies did not disclose the number of upcoming commercial flights or the cost of booking through cryptocurrency, though previous New Shepard passenger flights have carried a small group of paying customers alongside guests.
Crypto Payments in the Space Sector
Shift4’s Head of Crypto, Alex Wilson, said the capability aligns with a broader trend of digital assets entering mainstream payment systems. Citing market estimates, he noted that cryptocurrency has become a multitrillion-dollar asset class.
Industry analysts have pointed to the potential for cryptocurrency to streamline cross-border transactions, reduce processing times, and expand access for users without traditional banking options. However, they also note that digital asset payments can carry volatility risks, depending on currency fluctuations before conversion into fiat money.
Blue Origin, founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, has positioned its commercial flights as an entry point for private citizens to experience space travel. While the company’s primary business includes research missions and payload delivery, ticketed passenger flights have become a recurring feature of its New Shepard program.
Broader Implications
The partnership reflects a continued intersection between emerging technologies in finance and the commercial space sector. By enabling cryptocurrency and stablecoin transactions, companies like Blue Origin may broaden their customer base to include holders of digital assets seeking alternative payment channels.
The service is open for immediate use for all upcoming New Shepard flights. The companies did not indicate whether the cryptocurrency payment feature would extend to other Blue Origin programs or partnerships.
